The Strand Café

“The cafe in the historic Strand hotel has great colonial ambience. Myanmar high tea was grand, presented in a traditional lacquer container, a must try in Yangon. Tapioca custard in coconut milk, purple sticky rice pudding, banana & taro bakes with coconut, tiny steamed rice dumplings with palm sugar filling, fried husband & wife dumplings, ginger salad, assortment of savoury veg & prawn tempuras with chilli sambal, iced Burmese tea. Everything was freshly made and tasted delicious, worth the wait for service. Staff were very friendly, explained all the items nicely, served us a special off menu traditional tamarind drink on request. There is a standard western version of high tea too. It was quiet with no other guest in the cafe.”

“They call it a cafe, but it's both a restaurant and cafe. Or at least, I'm not aware of there being any other restaurant on-site. Anyway, I've had lunch here several times and have never been disappointed. The 2 and 3 course lunch set costs US$12 and US$19 (payable in Kyat) respectively. It's a bit steep to pay US$7 to go for an extra course so I always go for the 2-course lunch. A main (entree) and your choice of the starter or dessert is on offer. Water and plenty of bread with butter are served complimentary, but other drinks are extra. Service is quite attentive but not too intrusive. They take your order and once the food comes, it's delightful. Whether you choose a local or western option, the quality is superb as you would expect from a hotel of this caliber. Surprisingly, the prices are not too bad considering it's a 5-star hotel. Definitely a place I will visit again on my next business trip.”
