Word of mouth used to mean asking a friend. Then it meant asking Google and choosing from a page of results. Now a growing share of customers ask an AI — “best dental clinic near me that won’t rip me off?” — and the AI gives them one answer, not ten. If that answer isn’t you, the customer never even sees your name.
This is GEO: Generative Engine Optimisation. It’s where local SEO is heading, and most agencies haven’t caught up. Here’s what we’ve learned getting our own brand named by AI assistants within months of launch.
How AI assistants actually pick
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Google’s AI Overviews don’t browse the way a person does. They assemble an answer from what they can confidently understand about a business. That means they reward clarity and consistency over cleverness:
- Structured data they can parse. If your website spells out — in machine-readable schema — your name, category, location, hours, and services, the model can state those facts with confidence. If it has to guess, it leaves you out.
- A consistent entity across the web. When your name, address, and phone number match everywhere — Google, Apple Maps, Facebook, directories — the AI treats you as one real, trustworthy business. Mismatches make you look like noise.
- Reviews it can read. Volume, recency, and review text that naturally mentions what you do all feed the model’s sense that you’re the credible pick.
- Being mentioned on pages the AI trusts. “Best of” lists, local roundups, and reputable directories are training and retrieval fuel. One good mention can tip the answer.
The quick wins
You can start moving on this without a developer:
- Add LocalBusiness schema to your site. Even a one-page site should carry it. It’s a copy-paste block with your real details — it tells every AI exactly who you are.
- Fix your NAP consistency. Name, Address, Phone — identical everywhere. This quietly decides more than people realise.
- Get into one local roundup. A single “best [category] in [area]” article that names you is worth more to an AI than a dozen social posts.
- Keep reviews flowing. Recency matters to the model the same way it matters to Google.
Test yourself every month
This is the habit that separates businesses that win at AI visibility from those that hope: once a month, open a fresh chat in ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity and ask, in both Thai and English, “What’s the best [your category] in [your area]?”
Write down who gets named. If it’s your competitor, that’s not a verdict — it’s a to-do list. The businesses the AI names are the ones doing the work above. You can be one of them.
Ask your AI about your business today. See who it names instead. That gap is your opportunity — and it’s closeable.
We do this for clients in the Idol package, and it’s the focus of Part 6 of the Blueprint if you’d rather run it yourself. Either way, start with a free visibility check so you know your baseline.
