When someone near you pulls out their phone and searches for what you sell, they almost never scroll. They glance at the three businesses Google shows on the little map — the map pack — and they pick one. The organic blue links that most SEO advice obsesses over? On a phone, they’re below the fold, below the ads, and below the map. Barely a glance.
That is the entire game for a local business. Not your website’s page-two ranking. Not your follower count. Three pins, and you want to be one of them.
Where local clicks actually go
A “near me” search — or any search with local intent, even without those words — returns the map pack first. Those three results capture the overwhelming majority of clicks, calls, and direction requests. Position one in the pack is worth more than position one in the organic results below it, because it’s physically higher on the screen and it comes with the things that make someone act: a star rating, a photo, hours, and a tap-to-call button.
If you’re not in the pack for the searches that matter to your business, you are, for practical purposes, invisible — no matter how good your shop is.
What actually decides the three pins
Google weighs three things, and you can move all of them:
- Relevance — does your profile clearly say what you do? Your primary category is the single highest-leverage setting on your whole profile. Get it wrong and nothing else you do matters.
- Distance — how close you are to the searcher. You can’t move your shop, but you can set your service area and category correctly so you show up for the right searches.
- Prominence — how known and trusted you are. This is where reviews, photos, citations, and your website do their work. It’s the lever you have the most control over, and the one most businesses ignore.
The new layer: AI is reading the same signals
Here’s what changed. Customers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google’s AI Overviews “what’s the best X near me?” — and those tools pull from the same structured, consistent, well-reviewed business data that wins the map pack. Do the foundational work right and you don’t just rank on Maps; you become the answer the AI gives. Skip it, and the AI names your competitor instead.
What to do this week
You don’t need an agency to start. You need 30 minutes:
- Open your Google Business Profile and check your primary category. Make it the most specific accurate one.
- Fill every field — hours, services, attributes, products. The fields everyone skips are the ones Google rewards.
- Add fresh photos. A profile with recent exterior, interior, team, and product shots outranks a stale one.
- Ask three happy customers for a review today, and respond to every review you have.
That’s the foundation. We built 4,000+ reviews and 7 million views on one listing doing exactly this — with our own money on the line, no ad budget.
The map pack isn’t part of local marketing. For most businesses, it is local marketing. Everything else is amplification.
